Sherbert or Sherbet?

Turns out it's sherbet. There's no such thing as sherbert, regardless how much you desire a deliciously citrus-flavored icy treat right now. The r is all in your mind.

Much like the lounge in chaise longue. It's a long chair!

There's no "r" in the "lounge."

I don't get the controversy with that one. It's pronounced as it's written: "chase lounge."

I've said it all along. I've always insisted it's sherBET. But everyone I meet says "oh no, you're full of it, it's sherbert, no one wants to eat sherbet." And now, today, vindication is MINE. I feel so relieved.

Thank you , Thank you , Thank you!
We live in Texas and everyone insists on the "r". I have stuck with sherbet for years! Sherri

Webster shows "Sherbert" as an acceptable variant of "Sherbet".
Like it or not. Really depends on what part of the country you grew up in. No reason to get arrogant about it.

Webster's also posts "ain't" and "irregardless". Try looking for these and "sherbert" in the Oxford Dictionary, and you won't find them.

Craig, you've missed the point. It's not spelled "chaise lounge." It's spelled "chaise longue."

Oxford English Dictionary doesn't actually have a definition for SherBET or SherBERT in the way Americans know it. It's basically a variant on sorbet that contains dairy. OED closest definition to that calls it a " flavored water-ice." It makes no mention of dairy which means its not referring to the subject of this post. ALSO because language is an ever evolving thing, if and because enough people call it sherBERT eventually it becomes an actual synonym.

So there is such a thing as sherbert!

'Sherbet,' 'sherbert,' 'sorbet,' 'gelatinous fruit-flavored ice milk'-- if people use it, it's a word. That's called 'usage.' Get used to the concept.

And so everybody understands, the same applies to 'ain't'--irregardless of whether it's in the dictionary or it ain't.

If we're going off historical usage, it looks like sherBET is boss:

Sherbet is my maiden name...I can't tell you how frustrating it is when it's mispronounced - people actually INSIST that it's pronounced with the extra "r" and that I am wrong. Go figure! I assure you that, although it is commonly mispronounced, it TRULY IS Sherbet.

Do you have a source for this??

So, if millions of people pronounce it "sherbert", and the dictionary doesn't capture that usage, WHO'S wrong??
I guess I thought the point of a dictionary was to capture the evolving role of words in a language, no?

"So, if millions of people pronounce it "sherbert", and the dictionary doesn't capture that usage, WHO'S wrong??"

So, if millions of people think that the earth is flat but one crazy philosopher says it's round, WHO'S wrong??

There's a reason that "appeal to popularity" is a logical fallacy.

Home mole removal can work well for those who have moles that bother them as long
as the are not a typical moles. Individuals who have suffered with
acne look forward to the day when they can look in the mirror and see skin that is pimple and blemish-free.
But since something was happening I decided to keep trying for a
few more nights.
