Weird vs. Wierd
Weird is undoubtably the sassiest adjective in the English lexicon. It boldly violates the i-before-e rule, and it rhymes with neither "neighbor" nor "way," yet it is spelled as if it rhymed with both (which it clearly doesn't). Weird is the thinking man's bizarre (one z, two r's!).

It's easy to remember, because it's *weird* to spell it with the "e" before "i"!
What does the word "deck" mean? Craig keeps referring to deck as a proof reading entity. As in, "Jesus Christ! Can you Best of LA bitches decide how you're gonna style the damn HED and DECK already?" Derek says "deck" is something Craig only uses when Craig wears his "sparkly shoes." Which, I say, is every day. So. Craig, what gives? What's with the fancy sparklyness? Can't you just use SUB like everyone else?
And while we're at it, will you TOSC people just establish a separate column for comments from the masses already? So that my random proof reading comments don't go into un-related topic entries?
I'm with Craig. "Deck" is the cool way to say "subhed."
I'll allow, though, that our choice of "deck" may be a jargony remnant of our old State News language.
As such, I understand if some of you want to deck Craig in the hed.
This deserves its own post, but quickly:
The terminology changes at every publication I work at. At my very first paper, we used the terms "up" and "down" when talking about capitalizing or lowercasing. I've used it ever since.
Some places say cutlines are captions, and subheads can either be the display type beneath heds or the labels used to start new sections within a story (and some places call display type "furniture"!).
I could go on ... and will, at The Other Style Council!
